On Saturday, some Super Eagles players attended the 2025 Maracana Children’s Fest, which was named after their teammate Wilfred Ndidi.
The annual tournament, sponsored by Leicester City player Ndidi, was held in the newly renovated Maracana Stadium in Tolu, Ajegunle, Lagos.
Super Eagles stand-in captain William Troost-Ekong and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen were among the top players to attend the event, which drew at least 3,000 children.
Other attendees included Frank Onyeka of FC Augsburg, Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen, Raphael Onyedika of Club Brugge, and former international Jonathan Akpoborie.
The children demonstrated their football skills on 19 five-a-side grounds, exciting both visitors and fans at the stadium.
When Osimhen, the former African Footballer of the Year and top scorer in the Turkish League, entered the pitch, the fans went crazy.
Children chanted Osimhen’s name with delight, evidently thrilled at the rare opportunity to meet him in person.
Speaking during the ceremony, Ndidi expressed thanks and fulfillment for giving back to the city where he began his football career.
“I am amazed and thrilled. The competitiveness has improved in the last two years. We normally host it in June or December.
“The smiles on the kids’ faces are heartwarming. They look forward to it every year.
“As a child, I enjoyed watching football on television, but seeing players in person was always more exciting to me.
“That’s why we invited the Super Eagles players: to create a beautiful occasion for the kids.
“The kids are clearly excited to see the Super Eagles.” It provides them hope and inspiration for their future.
“We want to focus more on the kids and invest in their future. “Seeing someone like Osimhen means a lot to them,” the Super Eagles player explained.
Ndidi stated that the choice of Maracana Stadium was deliberate given its history of creating Nigerian football heroes.
According to him, Ajegunle has produced numerous players, including Odion Ighalo, and Maracana Stadium was a popular football stadium when he was growing up.
“Although I never played here as a child, I understood its significance. This endeavor helps to maintain Maracana’s legacy.
“Our goal is to preserve the Maracana moniker alive and to inspire future champions from Ajegunle.
“The participation of Super Eagles players demonstrates their commitment to the endeavor. “No one was forced; they came willingly,” he explained.

Ndidi praised his teammates’ participation, saying it meant a lot to the kids and the community.
“I am grateful to see my comrades here today. The children had the opportunity to meet and interact with them.
“We’ve already recognized talented students. But it’s critical to remind kids to continue in school.
“They must not sacrifice schooling for football. “School is essential, no matter how talented they are,” he said.
Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), Oladotun Coker, also praised the event.
“This initiative is wonderful. It’s an excellent technique to encourage grassroots football development.
“The kids were able to see their heroes face to face. That moment will be with them forever.
“The LSFA will always support efforts such as this.” It is truly a commendable effort,” Coker remarked.
Dignitaries at the ceremony were Mr Fatai Ayoola, Chairman of the Ajegunle Development Council, traditional rulers, and football fans.
