The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to owners of illegal properties in the Mayegun waterfront scheme, Eti-Osa Local Government, to vacate the premises immediately or face ejection. The seven-day ultimatum, which was issued last week Monday, expires today.

According to Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Yacoob Alebiosu, the affected individuals will be required to provide relevant documentation and approvals to justify their occupation of the properties in question.

“The unlawful activity must come to an end; the government will no longer condone or accept people encroaching on government properties,” Alebiosu emphasized.

“We are currently cleaning up Okun Ajah, then Mayegun. We will serve them contravention notices and thereafter the government will take appropriate steps.”

A recent inspection visit to the area by government officials revealed 280 illegal properties, comprising 208 buildings under construction and 72 undeveloped plots.

The Mayegun waterfront scheme, established in the 2000s, is divided into three sections: Parcels A, B, and C. Parcel B, the focus of the investigation, contains a mix of gazetted village excisions, valid certificates of occupancy, and encroached properties.

“The government will no longer tolerate encroachment on its properties,” Alebiosu reiterated.

“We urge the affected individuals to remove their properties before the notices are served.”

The Director of Public Affairs in the ministry, Dupe Ileyemi, confirmed that the commissioner has directed a detailed technical assessment of the Mayegun waterfront scheme to determine the extent of development and encroachment.

As the ultimatum expires today, residents are bracing themselves for the impending demolition.
