A number of opposition groups in Lagos have demanded that Saturday’s local government elections be canceled, calling them rigged and dishonest.
The Labour Party (LP), Young Progressives Party (YPP), African Action Congress (AAC), Action People’s Congress (APP), and Accord Party are among the opposition parties in Lagos that have called for the immediate cancellation of the local government elections that were held last Saturday. They have also denounced the process as being rigged and fraudulent.
The Forum of Lagos PDP Local Government Chairmen also declared preparations to contest the results in court during a joint news briefing, alleging that the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) had undermined democracy and denied opposition candidates the right to vote.
“The recently concluded Local Government elections were not an exercise in democratic choice; they were a premeditated, meticulously executed charade designed solely to impose the ruling party’s will upon the people of Lagos,” said LP Chairman Pastor Dayo Ekong, speaking at the conference through her deputy Mr. Olasupo Ajayi. We observed and recorded numerous anomalies that LASIEC had planned.
“We completely reject the fraudulent results declared by LASIEC in the affected LGAs,” she said, rejecting the results that had been announced. We personally blame Justice Bola Ighile for this farce and the total breakdown of LASIEC’s reputation while she was in charge.

Our determination is unflinching. We are accumulating exhaustive documentation of these acts. To combat this electoral robbery, we shall pursue all available legal and constitutional options. Until justice is done and Lagos residents’ wishes are honored, we won’t stop. Ekong promised legal action, saying, “The Labour Party will not allow this daylight robbery to stand unchallenged.”
Mr. Olusegun Mobolaji of the YPP also expressed disapproval of the procedure.
“There were many anomalies and irregularities in the process that led to this poll; even the schedule was inconsistent, tiresome, choppy, and intolerable for the opposition parties.” Due to certain problems, certain parties received nomination forms from LASIEC two days prior to the election. How can we give such an election legitimacy?
After protesting the removal of the APP emblem from the vote papers, Mrs. Abiola Adeyemi, the State Chairperson of APP, claimed she was intimidated and just avoided being attacked by suspected APC thugs in Badagry.
Additionally, Mr. Dele Oladeji, the chairman of the Accord Party, stated that “LASIEC acted as election players, not as umpires.” We ran in opposition to LASIEC. Before the election day, a systematic rigging was planned.
The Forum Chairman and PDP leader in Oshodi-Isolo, Chief Adegboyega Adegbesan, rejected the election results as invalid on behalf of the PDP.
There was no election held on Saturday. It was a criminal conspiracy and a spectacle that went against the will of the people. Massive vote box stuffing took place in PDP strongholds around the state. Ballots that had already been thumbprinted were presented in bags.
Additionally, he charged LASIEC with willful logistical errors.
“To irritate PDP supporters and lower turnout, election materials arrived late or not at all in many areas, and documentation was purposefully incomplete,” he said.
