Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, has demanded the cancellation of the recently held Local Government Council elections across the state, citing widespread irregularities and deliberate voter disenfranchisement.
The election, which took place on Saturday, July 3, was held across 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos.
Bucknor-Akerele expressed her displeasure over being unable to vote at her designated polling unit, stating that her name was missing from the voter register.
“I HAVE BEEN TO MY OWN UNIT, MY NAME IS NOT THERE. I AM CALLING FOR THE CANCELLATION OF THIS ELECTION BECAUSE THERE’S A CLEAR EFFORT TO RIG THE ELECTION IN FAVOUR OF ONE PARTY. OTHERWISE, WHY IS IT THAT PEOPLE ARE NOT ABLE TO VOTE IN THEIR UNITS?” SHE QUESTIONED.
The former deputy governor accused the electoral process of being manipulated and called on the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to annul the results.
“THERE IS A CLEAR EFFORT TO RIG THE ELECTION IN FAVOUR OF ONE PARTY. MANY PEOPLE ARE NOT ABLE TO VOTE BECAUSE THEY HAVE COMPLETELY DISRUPTED ALL THE POLLING UNITS,” SHE ALLEGED.
Her comments reflect growing concerns from various quarters about the transparency and credibility of the local government election process in Lagos.
