Lai Mohammed, a former minister of information and culture, has called his almost resignation from the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration the hardest decision he ever had to make.
At the publication of his book, “Headlines & Soundbites: Media Moments That Defined an Administration,” Mohammed reportedly revealed this information on Wednesday in Abuja.
He clarified that the book provided an insider’s perspective on the creation, defense, and dissemination of Buhari administration narratives, frequently in the face of crises, false information, and heavy public scrutiny.
He emphasized that he had a duty to maintain an accurate historical record and dispel long-standing myths because of his extended access to government decision-making, saying, “The toughest decision I took as minister was at a moment when I almost resigned.”
Lia Mohammed claims that he decided to write about his experience because he felt that Africans needed to share their own tales to avoid having their histories misrepresented.
He explained that the book was created to set the scene, dispel myths, and share personal observations from his time in government.
“For nearly eight years, I was at the center of government communication, crisis management, national orientation, culture, and tourism,” he said. I witnessed the decision-making process and how facts were frequently swamped by misinformation.
Former presidential spokesman Segun Adeniyi reviewed the book and pointed out that several contentious topics, like the Twitter shutdown and the #EndSARS protests, were handled more like legal briefs than fair historical accounts.
Speaking as well, Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, praised Lai Mohammed’s efforts and called him one of the Buhari administration’s most criticized ministers for his involvement in defending government policies.
Furthermore, Halima, the late former president Muhammadu Buhari’s daughter, stated that her father was fully aware of the accusations leveled against his administration throughout his tenure.
