Following the widely reported altercation between Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and a naval commander in Abuja, former Senate President Ahmed Lawan has called on Nigerians to have the utmost respect for the nation’s armed services.
Lawan reportedly addressed reporters on Thursday following his meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
The former president of the Senate commended the armed forces for their “unwavering dedication to protecting lives and defending national unity.”
All Nigerians, regardless of their social or political status, should respect the military’s selflessness, Lawan said, praising the security agencies for their sacrifices.
He declared, “Let me thank our armed forces and other security agencies for doing so much for us, to protect our lives and property.”
“We should respect them. They should always have our support. The military and other security agencies are receiving large sums of money from this administration, and I think the next step is to demand returns on our investments.
“But Nigerians, regardless of our status, must respect our armed forces,” Lawan continued. They and I have collaborated extensively. They are performing admirably. We must congratulate them and keep helping them.
Lawan’s comments reportedly follow a furious altercation between FCT Minister Wike and naval commander A.M. Yerima over a contested plot of property in Abuja’s Gaduwa District.
In a video that went viral online, Wike was seen arguing with armed naval officers stationed at a home purportedly owned by a former chief of naval staff.
When soldiers prevented FCT officials from entering, they reportedly took action to halt an unauthorized development. When the minister arrived, he accused the cops of hindering law enforcement and enjoying impunity.
Wike’s Reaction to Criticism
In response to the criticism the incident caused, Wike justified his conduct, claiming he stepped in because senior FCTA officials were attacked while performing their official duties.
“How can I serve as a minister while directors and other government personnel are being beaten and attacked? And I’ll do nothing but sit at my office? He inquired.
He emphasized that no Nigerian was above the law and cautioned against employing security personnel for private benefit.
“You don’t have a document. We can’t keep doing without consequence. You are not superior to any government. You cannot frighten them by carrying a gun. “They can’t intimidate me,” he informed the policeman.
According to Wike, the FCT lacked any documentation proving the land in question had been properly distributed.
It’s very regrettable. I don’t see how someone who got that job and knows he has a problem can’t come to my office. He continued, “I’m not the type of person who will give in to blackmail.
In response to the event, Mohammed Badaru, the Minister of Defense, stated that the Defense Headquarters was investigating the situation in order to avoid future conflicts between military troops and civilian authorities.
In addition to emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and clarity in interactions between security services and government officials, he promised to safeguard any officer deemed to be on “lawful duty.”
After completing its evaluation, the Defense Ministry is anticipated to issue additional directions.
