Adedapo Adegbola, 40, was sentenced to life in prison by a Nottingham Crown Court for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Steph Irons, a 23-year-old university student.
After their brief romance ended, Adegbola confessed to killing Irons at her Mapperley home on October 21, 2025, Irish Reports said Thursday.
The court was informed that the couple had dated briefly before splitting up after meeting while working together.
After the split, Adegbola grew obsessed with Irons, according to the prosecution, buying two knives online and taking a cab to her house.
As she was taking out the trash, he allegedly attacked her outside. He then broke in and repeatedly stabbed her inside the house.
Police launched an investigation when Irons’ coworkers got concerned after getting upsetting messages from her phone.
Her body was found in the living room by the officers, who declared her dead there.
Bloodstained clothes and other evidence were allegedly thrown along Mapperley and Carlton streets by Adegbola as he fled after the murder.
According to Nottinghamshire Police, he passed through Hull, Mansfield, Worksop, and Sheffield before turning himself in.
Investigators were able to reconstruct his movements prior to and following the incident, despite his refusal to respond to inquiries during interrogation.
Adegbola was convicted by the court to life in prison with a minimum of 25 years.
Irons was a “kind and compassionate young woman” whose life ended in “terrifying circumstances,” according to lead investigator Detective Inspector Stuart Barson.
Additionally, he stated that Adegbola preferred to escape while destroying evidence rather than attempt to get her medical help.
Irons’ mother said the family was “devastated” by her daughter’s passing in a victim impact statement. She characterized the student as lovely, compassionate, and full of promise. The student had intended to obtain a doctorate in clinical psychology.
