June 18, 2025, Makurdi In a show of solidarity after the devastating attacks on Yelwata and the neighboring towns, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu landed in Makurdi, Benue State, this morning. The visit demonstrated the federal government’s commitment to resolving the security situation and promoting national unity, and it was spurred by the increasing violence that has resulted in thousands of displaced people and scores of fatalities.
Governor Hyacinth Alia, senior government officials, and traditional leaders greeted President Tinubu when he arrived at Makurdi Airport. The President’s convoy immediately moved on to the most severely affected areas, where the devastation caused by the assaults is still evident. In addition to meeting with displaced people in makeshift camps and touring the remains of burned-out houses, Tinubu also saw continuing relief efforts. He expressed his deepest sympathies and promised impacted families that the federal government will step in right away to provide medical attention, shelter, and increased protection.
Meeting with Stakeholders at a Town Hall
The Makurdi Local Government Secretariat hosted a town hall meeting hosted by the President in the afternoon. Community leaders, traditional leaders, religious leaders, youth representatives, women’s organizations, security chiefs, and legislators were all present at the event.
In his speech, President Tinubu emphasized that “Benue’s peace is Nigeria’s peace” and called the Yelwata tragedy “a wound on the nation’s conscience.” He urged composure, collaboration, and solidarity in addressing the issues.
