According to Lamidi Apapa, the Labour Party’s (LP) divided National Chairman, he ought to succeed Julius Abure.
Since the Supreme Court overturned the Appeal Court’s ruling confirming him as national chairman, Apapa reportedly stated that he should succeed Abure as the LP’s eldest deputy national chairman.
Apapa emphasized that he should be the party’s leader since he is Abure’s closest relative in an interview with Arise News on Thursday.
“The Deputy Chairman of the party assumes the role of chairman in the event that the National Chairman is incapable of carrying out his duties for any reason. It’s automated. Because of the Constitution, I am not required to obtain approval from anyone. That is what a deputy national chairman does. It is unfortunate that I am the oldest of all the Deputy National Chairmen. As far as the hierarchy goes, I’m the next person to Abure.
As the next officer on the list, I am the one closest to Abure in terms of rank and all other considerations. I am the only one who can take over if he has any issues at all that give him reason to resign. It’s stated here quite clearly,” he remarked.

In his own words, he would not run for office and intended to salvage the party. The late former chairman, Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, did not complete his term before he passed away, thus he suggested the North should elect the party’s next chairman.
When I was making the declaration, I’m not sure if you saw a copy of my address. Although I’m not ready to run for office in the national government, I indicated one of the things I plan to do that I believe should give them the impression that I am ready to save the party. Additionally, I only plan to stay for six months. Thirdly, the party’s National Chairman will be zoned to the north. since Alhaji Abdulsalam, the deceased, was from the north and had been there for a few months before to his passing. Thus, they ought to be able to create the next chairman. And from the beginning, I have kept this pledge,” he continued.
