A few months after taking office, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike allegedly told President Bola Tinubu that he would hold the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for him in 2027, according to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
In an interview with journalists on Tuesday, Makinde revealed that the reason he was upset with the former governor of Rivers State is that Wike wants to back the president in 2027 and does not want the PDP to.
“The real issue is that I was in a meeting with the president and Wike,” he stated, going into further detail about his disagreement with Wike. In an open chat, I’m stating this. Along with a few others, the president’s chief of staff attended the meeting. “Sir, I’ll hold PDP for you in 2027,” Wike told the president. I was taken aback. We stood up and went to the veranda. “Wike, did we agree to this?” I replied. I dislike discussing individuals. However, I will discuss the true problem. Wike’s desire to back the president in 2027 is the true problem. That’s okay. He has the right to take that action. However, he should also give us the freedom to do our own thing if some of us want to make sure that Nigerian democracy endures, that we avoid becoming a one-party state, and that the PDP continues to exist. That is the only thing that separates Wike and myself.
After that encounter, I confided in one of our mutual friends. The president didn’t ask him to do this for him, I kept thinking. It was him who offered to take care of that.
“Maybe he was talking about an errand that the president never sent him,” I remarked to our mutual buddy. Now let’s talk to him. Let’s see if he changes his mind. However, he didn’t. Speaking further, the governor described how the president asked him to suggest a candidate for a ministerial position, but the candidate wasn’t chosen. Later, in a meeting with the president, the president asked him to organize the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, but the governor declined.
“The person wasn’t chosen,” he declared. Instead, the incumbent minister of power was chosen. He wasn’t named Minister of Economic Planning and Budget. They brought him to the ministry of power. I believe I went to the president in a later meeting to ask for his approval to modernize the airport. “He’ll sign it for me,” he declared.
He claims that the president questioned, “But what happened politically? I’ve heard you’re disappointed that the cabinet position was not awarded to your nominee. In Yoruba nation, it’s simpler to abort a pregnancy than to kill a kid, therefore if you don’t want the pregnancy to end, you won’t want the baby to die, I added. You’ll ultimately determine who you want to collaborate with, I added. Only people can be suggested by us. However, we are only here to support you if you know persons that meet your criteria for the type of person you want in your cabinet. Let me clarify, though: the minister of power lacks the ability to assist you in organizing the APC in Oyo State if you have chosen him for that purpose.
“No, no, no, Seyi, I want you to assist me in organizing APC in Oyo State,” he continued. I told him that as I am a PDP member, I could never assist you in organizing an APC in Oyo State. Therefore, we would have been in a completely different situation right now if we had a government of national competence and unity.
