After his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, passed away, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN) sent their condolences to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

According to reports, the late matriarch passed away in Cairo, Egypt, on Friday following a period of sickness. She was estimated to be around a century old.

In a post on his 𝕏 Twitter on Saturday, Malami assured El-Rufai of his prayers and support at the trying time, characterizing the death as a great loss.

“A mother’s passing is an invaluable loss, and I pray that Almighty Allah grants her Aljannatul Firdaus and gives you the strength and fortitude to bear this sad loss,” he wrote.

The former governor, who is being held by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission due to allegations of corruption and money laundering, is currently encountering difficulties, as Malami confirmed.

“Please know that you have my prayers, solidarity, and unflinching support during this time of bereavement and in the face of your current struggles. During these challenging times, I pray for you. “May her kind spirit rest in eternal peace,” he continued.

In a comment posted on X, Kwankwaso also expressed her grief for the late matriarch, characterizing the death of a mother as extremely difficult.

“Time can never fully heal the profound and irreplaceable wound that is the loss of a mother,” he wrote.

But he advised the family to find comfort in her legacy.

“But, in this time of sorrow, may you find solace in the lovely legacy she leaves behind: a life well-lived that blessed the world with remarkable children, including a son like Malam Nasir,” Kwankwaso said.

Kwankwaso encouraged the family to endure the loss patiently and prayed for divine pity and forgiveness for the departed.

Bello El-Rufai, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai’s grandson, had already posted on Facebook to notify her passing.

“Inna raji’un wa inna lillahi.” All of us will return to Allah SWT, from whom we came. I want to let everyone know that my grandma, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, died a few hours ago,” he stated.

Nasir El-Rufai was given provisional bail by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in order to attend his mother’s funeral.

Bashir El-Rufai, his son, verified the release on Friday night in a post on his 𝕏 Twitter.

On March 24, the former governor was charged with 10 counts that included allegations of money laundering and corruption before a Federal High Court in Kaduna.

The case has been postponed until March 31, 2026, so that pending applications, including his plea for bail, can be heard.

President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, and National Security Advisor Nuhu Ribadu are among the notable Nigerians who have also honored the late matriarch.

The El-Rufai family’s sadness is intensified by her death, which occurs just one week after the death of her daughter-in-law, Safiya Ali.
