A Sokoto businessman who was accidentally shot during a security operation has been compensated by the Department of State Services (DSS) with ₦20 million.
The secret police also extended an invitation to the victim to visit their Abuja hospital as part of their ongoing commitment to offering free medical care.
Naija News is aware that in mid-March, Tosin Ajayi, the DSS’s director general, approved the payment of ₦10 million in damages that had been given to the businessman six years earlier by a court.
In order to compensate for the missed time, the DSS DG gave the businessman an extra ₦10 million, making a total of ₦20 million.
In order to give the businessman access to free medical care whenever he wanted, Ajayi gave the DSS hospital instructions to legally include him in the Services’ medical care system.
According to a security industry insider who spoke to Vanguard, the businessman arrived at the hospital “a few days ago and has been receiving complimentary medical tests and treatment from the hospital’s top physicians.”
“As instructed by the DG, the man has been in the VIP ward, which is naturally air-conditioned,” he stated.
“To help him regain complete control of his limbs, they have been performing a number of tests and providing him with 24-hour medical care. I even comprehend the DG’s request for free food.
In Jos, Plateau State, DSS agents were said to have accidentally shot and wounded a businessman who happened to have the same name as the accused gunrunner in 2016 while conducting a predawn operation to capture the suspect.
Eventually, the gunrunner was caught.
The businessman filed a petition in a Federal High Court in Bauchi in 2018, two years after the occurrence, with the help of his lawyer, Idris Akibu.
In its ruling on the case with suit number FHC/J/CS/18/2018, the court, presided over by Justice Muhammad Shittu Abubakar, ordered the DSS to pay ₦10 million in damages to the wounded businessman.

“This is the third DG after this regrettable example of misidentification occurred. We were overjoyed when our new DG ordered us to make the payment.
Even more, he increased the victim’s funds by ₦10 million. It proves that security forces can uphold the law while simultaneously being compassionate,” the insider said.
