The prisoners are Hassan Isah (55), Adama Yahaya (42), Abdullahi Yahaya (35), and Maryam Daso Yahaya (28), all from Kwan-Dole Village in Jigawa State’s Mallam-Madori Local Government Area.
Speaking about the ruling, Abbas Rufa’i Wangara, Director of Protocol and Publicity for the Jigawa State Judiciary, emphasized its importance in promoting justice and the rule of law.
Wangara stated that the evidence given, which included five witnesses, a medical report, and the inmates’ confessional remarks, satisfied the court beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case has provoked a variety of responses. Hajiya Fatima Mohammed, a human rights activist, applauded the verdict, calling it a victory for human rights and a deterrence against jungle justice.
Aminu Bala, a law student, expressed similar comments, citing its role in combating vigilantism.
However, several community members, notably Alhaji Yusuf Abdullahi, expressed concerns about the death penalty, demanding a balance between justice and cultural values such as forgiveness and reconciliation.

Mustapha Kashim, the defense counsel, has announced preparations to appeal the decision within a week.
Kashim claimed that justice must include the requirements of the victim, dependents, and society, alluding to procedural issues in the trial.
“The appeal procedure will provide a new perspective on the case by reviewing the trial proceedings and the imposition of the death sentence.
“The outcome will have significant implications for the convicts and the community,” he said.
