The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria’s Nasarawa State chapter has stated its support for Dr. Aliyu Bello, the ruling All Progressives Congress chairman in Nasarawa State, as the consequences of his suspension by his electoral ward’s executive members for alleged anti-party activities continue to be felt.
It should be recalled that Ibrahim Iliyasu, the APC chairman in Gayam Ward of the state’s Lafia Local Government Area, had announced Aliyu Bello’s suspension on behalf of other executives, arguing that his alleged involvement in anti-party activities embarrassed the party and damaged the legitimacy of their joint attempts to advance the party.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the 12 other chairmen elected on the APC platform were led to the party headquarters in Lafia, the state capital, by Safiyanu Isa Andaha, the Executive Chairman of Akwanga LGA and the state’s ALGON Chairman, to express their support for Aliyu Bello’s continued leadership of the party.
In order to maintain the party’s unity and advancement, Andaha ordered the ward’s leadership to immediately send an apology letter to the state’s APC chairman, calling the Gayam ward executives’ actions “sad and ugly.”
The state’s ALGON chairman promised not to let desperate politicians ruin the party’s decades-long achievements, while announcing the unwavering support of the state’s 18 Administrators of Development Areas, 147 Ward Councillors, and 13 LG Chairmen for Aliyu Bello’s continuation.
We have been monitoring a very depressing and unsightly scenario where a few people from Gayam ward are attempting to suspend our chairman, he said. Someone who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, someone who is devoted to the party, and someone who has altered the party’s viewpoint.
Our chairman, we are here today to inform you that under your direction, the APC in Nasarawa State has made great strides. We will not support your expulsion from the party since we have witnessed your support for all party members.
Because we are proud of your accomplishments, the 147 elected Councillors, 18 Development Area Administrators, and 13 Executive Chairmen firmly support your leadership.
Andaha took use of the occasion to urge all APC members and supporters in the state’s 13 LGAs to stick together and resist the attempts of desperate politicians to sow division within the party in front of the general elections in 2027.
Aliyu Bello, the chairman of the Nasarawa State APC, responded by thanking the 13 council chairmen for their faith in him to hold the party’s leadership in spite of his current conflict with some of the members of his ward’s executive committee.
The process was deemed unlawful, he explained, because only eight of the 27 executive members of the Gayam Ward had signed the letter suspending him, while the other 19 members had continued to express their support for his leadership.
Bello stated that he is still the legitimate state chairman of the party, while rejecting any involvement in anti-party actions. He also cautioned that the members of the APC’s executive committee in Gayam Ward would not have the authority to suspend him as a state executive officer.
The executive members of the APC in Gayam Ward, he claimed, could not decide on his position as chairman; only the state’s executive committee, the highest decision-making body, could.
He added that he was just voted in by the state executive committee due to his dedication and commitment to the party’s expansion and advancement.
“I can’t be suspended by the Gayam Ward officials. Once they arrive, their objective is doomed. Their desperation led them to seek an injunction in a magistrate court, but according to our (APC) constitution, you must first try every internal option before going to court.
When they attempted to trouble the magistrate in the magistrate court, the magistrate later revoked the order.
Thus, it’s appropriate that you’re here today. You have come here to support Governor Abdullahi Sule as well as to sympathize with me, as some individuals are attempting to coerce him into complying with their egotistical political objectives. He continued, “We have made the decision that we will follow the governor wherever he travels in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
APC Chairman Dr. Aliyu Bello’s 13 local government chairmen paid him a solidarity visit, and it was reported that the State’s party leaders were in attendance.
