NAWOJ Lagos Pays Courtesy Visit to the First Female Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mrs. Mojisola Meranda

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, under the leadership of its Chairperson, Dr. Mrs. Adeola Ekine, paid a courtesy visit to the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, on Monday, January 20th, 2025. This visit marked a significant moment, as Rt. Hon. Meranda is the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
During the visit, NAWOJ Chairperson congratulated the Speaker on her groundbreaking achievement, highlighting its importance as a milestone for women in leadership across Nigeria. Dr. Ekine praised Rt. Hon. Meranda for her unwavering commitment to governance and her contributions to gender inclusivity in politics.
Dr. Ekine emphasized the symbolism of Rt. Hon. Meranda’s leadership in inspiring women and girls to break barriers and actively participate in governance and decision-making processes. She assured the Speaker of NAWOJ’s support in amplifying her achievements and advocating for policies that promote women’s empowerment.
In her remarks, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda expressed gratitude to the NAWOJ Lagos State Chapter for their recognition and support. She noted that her appointment as Speaker is a testament to the progress made in gender equality and called for more collective efforts to sustain and expand this progress.
The Speaker acknowledged the role of women journalists in shaping narratives and promoting societal change. She urged NAWOJ members to continue their advocacy for good governance, accountability, and the empowerment of women through responsible journalism. She appreciated NAWOJ, Lagos for their visit, pledged her support and promised not to disappoint Lagosians and the female community.
Dr. Ekine presented an overview of NAWOJ’s objectives and its role in fostering women’s voices in the media. She reiterated the association’s commitment to working with the Lagos State House of Assembly, especially in areas of mutual interest such as legislation that supports gender equity, child rights, and press freedom.
The Speaker reaffirmed her commitment to fostering a harmonious relationship between the legislature and key stakeholders, including NAWOJ. She expressed her willingness to collaborate with the association in initiatives aimed at advancing the welfare of women in Lagos State.
As a gesture of goodwill, the NAWOJ delegation decorated the speaker as a “NAWOJ Lagos Champion” which symbolizing female journalist’s admiration and solidarity to the new speaker, this act underscored the shared vision of promoting women’s rights and leadership at all levels.
This visit reaffirms NAWOJ Lagos State Chapter dedication to strengthening partnerships with female leaders to amplify the voices of women in governance and create pathways for the next generation of women leaders.
