NAWOJ Lagos, Women’s Groups Rally Across Constituencies to Demand Passage of Special Seats Bill

LAGOS, NIGERIA —
Members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, alongside the League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV), Lagos Chapter, and other women-focused advocacy groups, staged a coordinated statewide rally to demand the passage of the Reserved Seats for Women Bill (HB1349).
The peaceful advocacy march, held across multiple federal constituencies in Lagos, is part of a broader nationwide effort aimed at addressing the persistent under-representation of women in Nigerian governance and ensuring greater gender inclusion in the National Assembly.
During the exercise, delegations visited and submitted formal petitions at the offices of eight federal constituencies, including Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Ikeja, Alimosho, Lagos Mainland, Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, and Agege. The petitions urged lawmakers to champion the swift passage of the bill.
Carrying green leaves as symbols of peace and a subtle expression of dissatisfaction with the current gender imbalance in governance, the women marched to the constituency secretariat, reinforcing their call for immediate legislative action.
The Reserved Seats Bill is proposed as a Temporary Special Measure (TSM) designed to correct longstanding gender disparities in political representation. It seeks to create 74 additional seats in the National Assembly—37 in the Senate and 37 in the House of Representatives—exclusively for women. It also proposes three additional seats for women in each State House of Assembly, amounting to 108 seats nationwide.
If enacted, the measure is expected to remain in force for four election cycles, providing a structured pathway to significantly increase women’s participation in legislative processes and decision-making.
Speaking during the rally, the chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos, Jumoke Falayi Johnson, emphasised the broader importance of the bill.
“NAWOJ Lagos remains committed to the struggle for gender parity,” she said. “The Reserved Seats Bill is not just a women’s issue; it is a developmental necessity for Nigeria to ensure that the perspectives of half its population are represented at the highest levels of policymaking.”
NAWOJ Lagos and its partners reiterated their call for the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the bill and for its prompt assent, describing it as critical to Nigeria’s democratic growth and inclusive development.
The rally forms part of a coordinated national movement pressing for institutional reforms that will guarantee equitable representation for women across all levels of governance.
