The United Nations has been urged by Brig Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to intensify its efforts to combat illegal drug networks that jeopardize international peace, stability, and future.

Speaking on Monday, October 13, 2025, in New York, USA, at the 80th United Nations General Assembly Plenary Session of the Third Committee, Marwa issued a warning: the illegal drug trade can no longer hold the globe captive.

According to him, Nigeria’s collaboration with a number of nations has resulted in the notable apprehension of prominent traffickers.

He asserts that Nigeria places a high priority on international collaboration and intelligence sharing because to the global character of the drug problem. In addition to having solid collaborations with the UNODC, EU, DEA, INL, NCA, BKA, and other organizations, we have memorandums of understanding with a number of nations. Significant seizures, the arrest of well-known traffickers, and successful convictions have resulted from these partnerships, all while fully respecting human rights.

“Madam Chair, the illegal drug trade cannot hold the world hostage any longer.” To destroy the networks endangering our peace, stability, and future as a society, we must stand unified and determined.

He said Nigeria is already taking proactive, evidence-based steps to reduce the threat, even though the theme of the 80th UNGA Plenary Session of the 3rd Committee correctly acknowledged that the global drug problem is a complex issue that calls for coordinated and collaborative action.

“As we expand care and support for individuals affected by drug use through treatment in rehabilitation centers, opioid substitution therapy, and safer needle exchange programs, we have strengthened measures against money laundering linked to drug proceeds,” he said.

The most widely abused substance in Nigeria is still cannabis. In order to solve this, we are putting the Alternative Development Program into action, supporting food security and environmental preservation while involving communities in the process of substituting legal livelihoods for illegal cannabis cultivation. Our worldwide awareness-raising campaign for the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) project continues to engage all facets of society, reaffirming our shared responsibility to safeguard communities and families from the perils of drug abuse.

“New psychoactive substances and the use of the Dark Web for trafficking are two new issues that we are addressing. Through the dismantling of covert labs and the prevention of precursor chemical diversion, Nigeria is taking firm action against the illegal manufacture and trafficking of methamphetamine.

“Effectively carrying out our National Drug Control Master Plan has improved stakeholder collaboration and produced quantifiable outcomes. A toll-free drug call center in Nigeria is open around-the-clock and is manned by specialists who provide counseling in the main languages of Nigeria in an effort to promote social justice. This program helps close the gap in treatment and fights the stigma attached to drug use.
