In a warning to labor unions and oil industry stakeholders on Wednesday, former Senate Leader Ali Ndume said that there was an increasing effort to demonise Dangote Refinery.

His participation comes after a confrontation between the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria and the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers and the Dangote Refinery management.

The refinery was accused of refusing to permit truck drivers to join the union in accordance with the Trade Union Act, which prompted NUPENG to launch an industrial action and close depots.

By reportedly offering items to foreign traders at lower prices than Nigerian marketers, DAPPMAN accused the refinery of suppressing competition.
Even after the Department of State Services stepped in to settle the conflict with the workers’ union, tensions in the downstream industry have continued.

“A poisonous media narrative to paint Dangote in a bad light in the eyes of Nigerians and the international community,” Ndume said in a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday.

“I implore NUPENG, PENGASSAN, and all other interested parties to have a positive conversation with Dangote instead of causing rifts and excessive sensationalism in the press.

“We should not subject common people to an unnecessary power struggle; instead, we should strive to strike a balance between labor rights and the needs of national development,” he stated.

Although the senator noted that prior administrations had attempted to persuade private operators to construct refineries, many licensees had not risen to the occasion.

He said that prior administrations had given licenses to other Nigerians before Dangote grabbed the chance to construct his refinery. How did they dispose of it? Some of them merely took advantage of the allocation incentives for crude oil.

As long back as 2002, licenses were given to 12 private operators to construct refineries and lessen reliance on imported petroleum, if my memory serves me correctly. The initial batch of licenses was revoked, and the Department of Petroleum Resources then issued nine fresh licenses to private investors in 2007.

The effort to unite and construct refineries was not taken by those posing as gasoline importers today. Once more, licenses to construct modular refineries were given to private companies during the Buhari administration. The number of them who are banding together to falsely accuse Dangote of monopolizing the market is so small that it barely scratches the surface.

It was incorrect to accuse Dangote of trying to monopolize the political sector, according to Ndume, who represents Borno South.

In accordance with the Petroleum Industry Act, the former Senate chief whip further contended that the Federal Government has already begun to deregulate the industry and make room for fair competition.

“Talking about monopolies in a deregulated industry is incorrect. No one has been intentionally hampered, and no athlete has received a preferential treatment at the expense of others,” he continued.

He called on authorities to intervene and stop disagreements from jeopardizing the distribution of petroleum products, such as the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.
