The former Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has come under severe criticism after he mocked Governor
Godwin Obaseki and his wife, Betsy, for being childless.
Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North in the Senate, made the disparaging comments on Sunday while reacting to a statement credited to Betsy.
The Edo First Lady had allegedly claimed at a forum in the state that the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Monday Okpebholo, does not have a wife.
In a trending video posted on X, Oshiomhole described the governor’s wife as barren woman.
He also claimed the governor and his wife refused to adopt any child because they do not love children.
“I was shocked yesterday to see Mrs. Obaseki, the first lady, saying that our candidate has no wife. She is the most, I’m sorry that she has to say that, because here is a woman who has no child. Between him and Obaseki, they have no child, they are childless,” he stated.
“They are even not ready to adopt. I mean, I don’t blame, anybody should not have a child. But people who have love for children, they go to motherless home and adopt children.

“They have not adopted, they are both in their 60s. So you married, I don’t know whether it’s a contract or whatever it is, but they have no child.”

However, the comments have been met with strong backlash by many social media users especially women in Edo State who have spoken out against
Oshiomhole’s remarks.
An X user with the handle @IamTheIroko, who took exception to the Senator’s comments, wrote:
“I believe many more will come forward to support Her Excellency, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: it was unwise for a former Governor like Sen. Adams Oshiomhole to act as a spokesperson for a gubernatorial candidate.
“Unfortunately, some people fail to grasp the implications of Oshiomhole’s actions. If Edo women don’t strongly condemn this behavior, many of them will be subjected to similar treatment, maybe in a different format.
“This is the same Adams Oshiomole who called a widow to go and die. While women are entitled to express themselves freely, it’s unacceptable for a man like Adams Oshiomhole to make such comments.
“In fact, Edo women should be seen demanding an apology from Oshiomhole for his insensitive remarks.”
