President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received a heartfelt plea from Africans for Human Rights International (AfriRights), a Lagos-based human rights organization, for immediate financial assistance for Adetarami Adegbehin, a retired Superintendent of Police (SP) who is gravely ill and bedridden.
Adegbehin was a former Superintendent of Police who reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries in a 2017 accident while still on official duty and in service, according to a letter to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces (AP/No. 54161).
He was the Uyo Sector Commander of the Inspector General of Police Special Taskforce on Petroleum and Illegal Bunkering (IGPSTF), and the letter said he had been dealing with the aftermath of a horrific car accident that happened on the way to Abuja.
It was learned that the event, which happened on March 24, 2017, along the Kabba road in Kogi State, left him crippled and deeply indebted following years of fruitless medical attempts.
Despite numerous medical treatments at various hospitals, including Primus Specialist Hospital in Abuja, the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Igbobi, Reddington Hospital, Duchess International Hospital, LASUTH, and currently the B.P. Frank Trado-Medical Orthopedic Clinic in Ikorodu, AfriRights, under the leadership of Comrade Dr. Afolabi Gbajumo, revealed that the Nigeria Police Force had not paid the officer back for the bills he incurred during and after his service. The total medical expenses as of July 2025 are ₦25,579,655. Despite his devoted 35 years of service and noteworthy accomplishments, such as community policing and infrastructure development in multiple states, the organization bemoaned the officer’s status, claiming that the authorities he worked for had deserted him.

During his active years, Adegbehin accomplished a number of significant milestones, including the creation and rebuilding of police facilities in Ikeja, Ibadan, Sagamu, Badagry, and Ogba. These projects were mostly made possible by his goodwill and community engagement initiatives. In Ogun and Lagos States, he continued to make a substantial contribution to police growth even as he recovered from the tragedy. The retired officer got multiple accolades for his unselfish service, which are highlighted in the letter. These include praise from several royal institutions around Nigeria, the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN), and the US Consulate. Even with these honors and his commitment to public duty, he is still ignored and in desperate need of aid. In order to facilitate Adegbehin’s complete recovery, AfriRights has therefore urged President Tinubu to take prompt action in paying the outstanding medical bills and providing additional financial support. The organization contends that saving a man who has demonstrated such exceptional devotion and dedication would be both just and inspirational for other patriotic officers who are under duress while serving their country. Adegbehin, who is 59 years old, is still confined to a bed in Ikorodu, despite the fact that he is still mentally capable and eager to contribute. Saving him from this protracted agony, the NGO emphasizes, will demonstrate that Nigeria honors its heroes, particularly those who put their lives in danger to defend others.
