On Saturday, August 16, 2025, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered the restriction of movement in the affected areas in anticipation of the upcoming by-election in 13 states around the Federation.
Speaking through a statement issued by Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, the IGP restated his previous orders to deploy operational logistics to the impacted States and Local Government Areas where the elections would take place in order to create an atmosphere conducive to a free and fair election.
The states that are impacted are Adamawa, Edo, Jigawa, Kogi, Kano, Ogun, Zamfara, Niger, Oyo, Taraba, Enugu, and Anambra.
“The IGP has directed the deployment of senior officers with the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police and Commissioners of Police to assist State Commissioners of Police in ensuring proper supervision over the electoral process for a smooth and hitch-free election.” According to the statement, officers and men from the Police Mobile Force, Special Intervention Squad, Force Intelligence Department, and other tactical units have also been deployed in order to ensure a smooth election.

In addition, the IGP has mandated that all vehicles on roads, waterways, and other transportation routes be prohibited from moving from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day in the impacted LGAs, with the exception of those providing essential services like firefighters, ambulances for medical emergencies, accredited media, INEC officials, and electoral observers.
The IGP also restates the prohibition against any security personnel serving as VIPs or escorts going to voting places and collation centers with their principals or politicians during the election. Quasi-security units, privately owned security personnel, and state-established and owned security organizations are likewise prohibited from taking part in electoral security administration.
In addition to urging all citizens to observe the law both during and after the elections, the Inspector General of Police affirms that all necessary security measures have been put in place to guarantee that their right to vote is unhindered and charges all officers assigned to this special duty with ensuring compliance with NPF standard operational protocols for elections.
