Daniel Bwala, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Advisor on Policy Communication, criticized recent calls by some US politicians for Nigeria to repeal Sharia law on Thursday, calling the action an infringement on the nation’s constitutional integrity and sovereignty.
In an interview with Arise Television on Thursday, Bwala stated that any foreign meddling in Nigeria’s domestic legal system is undesirable and against international standards.
Bwala responded, “They don’t have the locus,” when asked if the US government has the authority to force Nigeria to change its constitution or outlaw Sharia law in the country’s northern states.
He continued, “Doing that will amount to infringing on a country’s territorial integrity and territorial right.”
He emphasized that Nigeria’s federal system for state-by-state variations in legislative frameworks.
“Sharia law is not a national legal system. Bwala clarified, “We also use a federal system of governance, but theirs is more sophisticated.
Additionally, Bwala rejected the purported threat of military action in Nigeria made by US President Donald Trump, claiming that it would be against international law.
“Even the threat of a potential military invasion is inconsistent with the US convention because there are only three conditions upon which another country can invade militarily,” he stated.
“You are either asked to be in that country by the UN, you are at war with that country, or you are invited by that country.”
Following a congressional briefing in the US, where politicians were urged to advocate for the repeal of Sharia law and the dissolution of the Hisbah religious police in Nigeria, Bwala made his comments.
Extremist organizations like Boko Haram and ISWAP, according to Dr. Ebenezer Obadare, Senior Fellow for Africa Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, “weaponize Sharia-based institutions and Hisbah operatives to advance extremist ideology, enforce forced conversions, and operate unchecked in many communities,” he said during the hearing.
However, Bwala maintained that Nigeria’s constitutional modifications are an internal matter that is outside the jurisdiction of any foreign authority.
On the matter of changing our constitution, we disagree with them. He proclaimed, “Nigeria is a sovereign state, we are not Venezuela, and America has never colonized anywhere.”
