The Nigerian government has come under fire from US Congressman Bill Huizinga for what he claims is a lack of urgency in dealing with the continued attacks on Christian communities throughout the nation.
According to reports, Huizinga voiced his worries in an interview with Arise Television, criticizing Abuja’s official reaction to the issue for being “dismissive.”
According to the congressman, the pattern of attacks indicated organized and deliberate attacks on Nigeria’s Christian communities.
Drawing comparisons to previous international failures in Rwanda and South Sudan, he argues that the United States must move quickly to prevent another massive catastrophe in Africa.
Huizinga disclosed that he had personally spoken with religious leaders and survivors who claimed they felt singled out by frequent attacks on their homes and neighborhoods.
In order to safeguard its population, he called on the Nigerian government to adopt more forceful and proactive steps.
The congressman insisted that ambiguous promises were no longer adequate and urged the federal government to lay out detailed plans to stop the escalating wave of violence.
Huizinga also emphasized Nigeria’s strategic importance to the stability and economic expansion of West Africa, cautioning that persistent insecurity could jeopardize the area as a whole. He called on Abuja to take swift action to stop more violence.
“I’m happy that we are able to do this,” he remarked. We were too late in Rwanda, as I’ve been telling some of my colleagues, and this has been extremely crucial. When it came to South Sudan and several other crimes that had occurred in Africa and other parts of the world, we were too late. Thus, let’s avoid being too late once more.
“The Fulani and radicalized Islamists are attacking both moderate Muslims and Christians, which is what worries me the most. And when you consider that 200 Christians were killed on Christmas Eve a few years ago, I think it’s difficult to reject. It was obvious that the attack was coordinated. I also spoke with some of the villagers. I’ve spoken with religious leaders who have been dealing with this for a long time. They experience a sense of being singled out.
“They understand that when their houses are broken into or attacked in the middle of the night, it’s not just a case of people fighting.” They feel like they are being targeted. As a result, the US has responded quickly.
“I want to take this seriously because, once more, I don’t think the Nigerian government has handled the matter seriously. They must show what they are doing to safeguard Christians in general and Christians in particular, as well as what they are doing and suggesting to reduce that threshold for violence.
“You know, you asked earlier if I was happy with the answer. No, because I believe they have said, “No, there isn’t really a problem.”
“Well, I believe there is a problem, and I would like them to either clearly explain why they believe there is no problem—which, as I had previously stated in the meeting with the Foreign Minister, I don’t think was adequately addressed at all—or, more satisfactorily, explain how they intend to address the violence in Nigeria and both against Christians.
“However, I believe that in general, a lot of other violent situations, you know, and we previously discussed the significance of Nigeria in not only West Africa but the entire African continent, as well as the economic success and potential that they have.”
