The National Judicial Council (NJC) on Thursday recommended Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The council made the recommendation at its 106th meeting presided over by the outgoing CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
Ariwoola will retire from the bench on August 22 having attained the mandatory age of 70 years.
Justice Kekere-Ekun will become the second woman to serve as CJN in Nigeria after Justice Mariam Mukhtar if the recommendation is approved by President Bola Tinubu.
Justice Mukhtar held the position from July 2012 to November 2014.
The NJC Director of Information, Soji Oye, who confirmed the development in a statement in Abuja, said the council also recommended the appointment of 27 others as judges of state high courts at the meeting.
These appointments are however subject to the approval of the president and the affected state governors.
Oye said: “This is imperative as Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, will formally bow out of office as the Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria next week Thursday, August 22, 2024.
“The Council also recommends twenty-seven (27) candidates for appointment as judges of state courts and a candidate for appointment as Kadi of the Sharia Court of the FCT, Abuja, to their various state governors and Mr. President.”
