The Nigerian Army’s 17 Brigade in Katsina State has clarified the facts behind Corporal Ude Jude’s death, refuting internet rumors that he died due to neglect or internal sabotage.
According to reports, Capt. Abayomi Adisa, the brigade’s acting assistant director of Army public relations, made the clarification in a statement on Sunday.
Reports alleging wrongdoing within the military, according to Adisa, are deceptive and purposefully meant to mislead the public.
According to him, the deceased soldier was a corporal who joined the Nigerian Army in 2012 as part of the 67 Regular Recruit Intake, not a lieutenant as has been widely reported.
Additionally, the army stated that the event that resulted in his death did not take place within the barracks.
“He was injured outside while deployed at the Forward Operating Base in Funtua; the incident that resulted in his death did not occur within the barracks as speculated,” Adisa stated.
The soldier allegedly left his job position to buy personal items on February 16 at around 8:30 p.m., according to the army spokesperson.
During the excursion, Jude, a resident of Enugu State’s Ezeagu Local Government Area, was attacked.
The attack was the consequence of a physical conflict with a citizen after a personal argument, according to additional investigations.
According to Adisa, the wounded soldier was sent to the 17 Brigade Medical Center for treatment after receiving emergency first assistance.
According to medical reports, he sustained injuries associated with a violent encounter, including stab wounds.
He added that in order to give the soldier time to properly recover, he was relieved of duty. But on March 24, 2026, just after receiving medical attention, the soldier slumped outside his home, causing disaster.
Adisa stated, “Tragedy struck on March 24, 2026, when he collapsed outside his residence shortly after receiving medical care, despite weeks of treatment and clinical monitoring.”
“He was taken back to the Medical Center, but upon arrival, it was determined that he was dead.”
The Army Helps a Grieving Family
According to the brigade, its leadership supported the family of the fallen soldier and managed burial arrangements.
The statement claims that the 82 Division Garrison in Enugu provided extra institutional support, and the Garrison Commander oversaw the delivery of a coffin and mortuary services.
According to established protocols, the soldier’s military gear was transferred to his next of kin, according to the army.
Additionally, the brigade offered security assistance during the funeral and kept in touch with the grieving family.
Adisa clarified that the requirement to confirm information and confer with pertinent military formations before making a public response was the reason for the delay in releasing an official statement.
He gave assurances that measures were being made to find and capture the attackers.
