The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike has signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and the China Geo-Engineering Corporation Overseas Construction Group (CGCOC) to improve lighting and water supply in Abuja.
This was disclosed in a statement issued to newsmen in Abuja on Sunday by Anthony Ogunleye, Director of Press in the FCT Minister’s Office.
The MoUs were formalized in Beijing during Wike’s visit to the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit alongside President Bola Tinubu.
The statement detailed that the projects covered by these agreements are expected to be completed by the Federal Capital Territory’s 50th anniversary.
Wike highlighted the alignment of these initiatives with President Tinubu’s vision for transformative changes in Abuja.

“One key project that is very dear to us is the lighting up of Abuja. As Abuja will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, we envision it to be a jubilee year. We want Abuja to shine like other global cities, similar to the lighting we have seen in Beijing,” Wike said.
Under the MoUs, CCECC will be responsible for illuminating major areas including Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse, the Central Business Area, Airport Road, and Bill Clinton Drive. In contrast, CGCOC will oversee lighting projects in Mabushi, Katampe, and Garki districts.
In addition to the lighting initiative, Wike also discussed advancements in the Greater Abuja Water Works project, managed by CGCOC, which is approaching 75 percent completion. He expressed hope that the project would be finished by December.
Wike also revealed plans to extend water supply to rural areas such as Gwagwalada, Kwali, and Kuje through a new MoU with CGCOC, emphasizing President Tinubu’s directive to address both urban and rural needs.
Chen Sichang, President of CCECC, and Lan Meizhong, Chairman of CGCOC, both expressed their appreciation for the trust placed in them and pledged to deliver the projects with high quality and within the agreed timelines.
These MoUs mark a significant achievement following the recent FOCAC Summit in Beijing.
