The Federal Government has deported Zimbabwean Bishop Eben K. Nhiwatawi for violating Nigeria’s immigration regulations.
Nhiwatawi was detained on August 24 in Yola, Adamawa State, by Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) personnel for breaching immigration protocols.
According to DCI Kenneth Udo, the Service Public Relations Officer, Nhiwatawi entered Nigeria on August 21, 2024, with a Tourist Visa (F5A) intended exclusively for tourism activities.
“However, he was found to be involved in the Methodist Church leadership election process, which clearly breaches the conditions associated with the tourist visa as stipulated in the Nigeria Visa Policy 2024,” Udo stated.

As a result, Kemi Nandap, Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, has ordered Nhiwatawi’s immediate repatriation with Ministerial approval.
The statement emphasized that while the NIS supports lawful Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and individuals participating in business and social activities to foster economic growth, it will not condone violations of immigration laws.
“The Service remains committed to safeguarding national security and will continue to monitor the activities of foreigners to ensure compliance,” the statement concluded.
Nhiwatawi was reportedly involved in efforts to install a bishop for a faction of a church in Adamawa.
