Kate Henshaw, a Nollywood actress, has questioned the country’s continued democratic leadership if it fails to meet citizens’ demands.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s special Democracy Day programme on Thursday, the film actor claimed that the country’s democratic experience has failed to make a substantial difference in the lives of regular individuals.
Kate Henshaw bemoaned the decline of the middle class, the deterioration of public infrastructure, and rising poverty rates, emphasizing that Nigerians are fighting to survive under deteriorating socioeconomic conditions.
Despite the terrible realities, Henshaw advised Nigerians not to give up on demanding accountability from government officials.
She stated, “People aren’t feeling our democracy. Yes, we have had unbroken democracy, but how does that translate into practice? What exactly is the “trickle-down effect”? What influence does it have on the lives of ordinary Nigerians?
“There is no middle class, and we cannot keep lying to ourselves. People are impoverished, healthcare is a mess, and there is no security.
“Everything around us is disintegrating, and Nigerians are barely surviving by the skin of their teeth.
“The battles for the vital things cannot be won in one day. We just can’t remain quiet. We must always ensure that we hold the government accountable.
“There must be justice, equity, and security for the people — for their lives and property.”

The actress went on to remark that she was hesitant to participate in the traditional congratulatory greetings for Democracy Day because she had nothing to say and nothing had not been accomplished.
She went on to explain, “I would have tweeted something like ‘Happy Democracy Day,’ but I didn’t know what to say. It’s just a sense of something that hasn’t truly materialized – something that is fading.
“But I still hold on to hope that we will have a country to live in, for our children — something they can build on.”
