Nigerians have been alerted by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) about the growing number of scams involving artificial intelligence (AI) that prey on unsuspecting investors by posing as celebrities and promising guaranteed riches.

According to the commission, platforms like CBEX, Silverkuun, and TOFRO were engaging in illegal activity by promoting trading systems driven by artificial intelligence that offered unrealistic profits.

“These platforms continued to deceive the public with false claims of AI-driven investments despite not being registered or regulated by the SEC.” Because of the significant dangers they posed to investors, the commission issued a number of disclaimers against their operations, the agency said.

With manipulated videos featuring politicians, celebrities, and TV hosts being shared through Facebook ads, Instagram reels, and Telegram groups to give fraudulent platforms an air of legitimacy, the SEC clarified that scammers are increasingly using deepfake videos and AI-generated content to entice victims.

The commission claims that “fraudsters are using AI to create fake testimonials and endorsements that look real.” Because of this, conventional fraud detection techniques are now less successful, which is why tech-enabled regulation and increased public awareness are necessary.

The SEC clarified that it is implementing sophisticated surveillance systems that can identify fraudulent activity in real time in order to combat the growing threat. It also stated that collaborations with the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) are being reinforced to facilitate data exchange and cooperative enforcement efforts.
