The D’Tigers, Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, opened their FIBA AfroBasket 2025 campaign on Wednesday in Luanda, Angola, defeating Madagascar 77-59.
In the match, which was played at the Pavilhão Multiusos de Luanda, D’Tigers took the lead right away. By halftime, they had increased their lead to 38-27 after winning the opening quarter 18-4. Before ending the game with a final period score of 22–13, they expanded the lead with a dominant third quarter, which they won 20–9.
Due to their superior shooting, Nigeria was able to convert 48% of their field goal attempts, whereas Madagascar only managed 35%. With 40 rebounds compared to their opponents’ 31, the D’Tigers also dominated the boards.
The player with the most points, guard Caleb Agada, finished with 22 points, seven rebounds, and two assists in just over 25 minutes of play.
A veteran forward who played for Nigeria in the 2015 AfroBasket, Stan Okoye scored 13 points and pulled down five rebounds. Important contributions were also made by Talib Zanna and Ike Nwamu on either side of the floor.

With 20 points, Raharimanana was Madagascar’s star player, but his efforts were unable to challenge the Nigerians, whose depth and expertise were too great.
The victory puts Nigeria in a great position in Group B, where they are paired with Cameroon, the 2017 bronze medallists, and Tunisia, the reigning champions. The D’Tigers’ next games are against Cameroon on Sunday, August 17, and Tunisia on Friday, August 15.
Leading the squad through the group stage is the responsibility of interim head coach Mohammed Abdulrahman, who was formerly the assistant coach.
Nigeria has won four silver medals (1997, 1999, 2003, 2017), three bronze medals (1995, 2005, 2011), and one gold medal (2015) in its AfroBasket history.
