The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) on Thursday, issued a stern warning to filling stations against supplying premium motor spirit (PMS), or petrol, to black marketers. The regulatory body has vowed to take action against those found in violation of this directive.
In a post on X, the NMDPRA announced that it would be suspending the licenses of filling stations caught selling fuel to illegal peddlers. The decision follows a recent stakeholders’ meeting where the issue of black market fuel sales was discussed.
“NMDPRA embarks on a war against the illegal sale of petroleum products, especially PMS, in jerrycans. Filling stations are advised to desist from servicing illegal peddlers; failure to do so will result in the suspension of retail licences,” the regulator said.

The regulator expressed concern about the proliferation of illegal fuel dumps in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), particularly near filling stations. It highlighted the dangers posed by these activities, including the potential for fuel shortages and safety hazards.
To combat this problem, the NMDPRA has launched a campaign to crack down on illegal fuel sales. The agency said it had conducted surveillance operations in the FCT, leading to the arrest of individuals involved in these activities.
The NMDPRA’s actions are aimed at ensuring the orderly distribution of fuel and preventing the exploitation of consumers by unscrupulous individuals. By holding filling stations accountable for their role in the supply chain, the regulator hopes to curb the illegal sale of petrol and maintain price stability in the market.
