During a recent executive session, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and Senate President Godswill Akpabio reportedly clashed, but the Senate has denied the reports.
Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs Chairman Senator Yemi Adaramodu called the allegations false and deceptive in a statement released on Sunday.
According to him, the publications portrayed ordinary parliamentary procedures as indications of internal strife.
“We have been alerted to various media reports that the Senate’s leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, and president, Godswill Akpabio, fought during an executive session that was recently held to discuss whether the Senate should go on annual recess,” the statement said.
“There is not the slightest bit of veracity in the reports. In their entirety, they misrepresent long-standing customs and practices in parliaments around the world, where members, irrespective of their political inclinations, use the tools of parliamentary debates, questions, or interpellations to discuss every initiative in a decisive and diverse manner prior to approval or authorization.
Strong debate is still a feature of parliamentary democracy, the Senate spokesperson said, and it does not signify that members are not united.

The Senate is not any different as the highest legislative body in our nation. Almost every day, our Chamber undergoes rigorous assessment of every bill, motion, and proposal, much like other parliaments.
“This involves intensive discussions in which members examine and evaluate each proposal that is presented to the Senate solely for the benefit of more than 230 million Nigerians,” he stated.
The discussions, whether in plenary or committee meetings, should not be interpreted as personal altercations or indications of disunity among Senate leadership, Adaramodu emphasized.
“Debates on policy issues, whether in the chamber or committee room, should not be misinterpreted as member altercations, nor do they suggest any crack in the rank of the leadership,” he said.
