Thirteen new degree programs have been approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and are now available to interested students at Nigerian universities.
According to reports, the Commission sent out a circular to all vice-chancellors announcing the programs’ inclusion in the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).
It stated that the permission is a component of initiatives to improve academic relevance and bring higher education into line with international trends.
Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, the Executive Secretary, signed the NUC circular, which was issued by the organization’s spokesperson.
Artificial Intelligence; Classical Christian Education; Human Kinetics with a focus on sport management; Geomatics Engineering; Islamic Economics and Finance; Parasitology and Entomology; Telecommunication Science; Water Sanitation and Hygiene; Cooperative Economics and Management; Nuclear Science; and Nuclear Engineering are among the recently approved programs.
The commission states that in March 2025, experts from the Nigerian university system helped develop the new programs’ 70% national component. Universities are expected to develop the remaining 30% institutional component in accordance with CCMAS provisions.
Following a successful resource assessment visit, the NUC encouraged universities interested in offering any of the new programs to start implementation in the 2025–2026 academic year.
Additionally, vice-chancellors were instructed to distribute the authorized CCMAS documents to the appropriate academic planning units, departments, and faculties.
