According to former education minister Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, former President Muhammadu Buhari kept the gasoline subsidy in place to prevent deaths among Nigerians.
Nwajiuba claimed in an appearance on Arise TV on Monday that the former president made important contributions to Nigeria’s progress and that statistics from his eight-year term demonstrate his work.
“Every figure from every publication that is known to exist during the past eight years is unambiguous. This economy has made two recoveries from recessions. This economy experienced the COVID-19 pandemic. He performed exceptionally well in this economy, according to the former minister.
“When he went, we had the dollar at less than N500, according to the exchange rate. In order to prevent the deaths of Nigerians, he held subsidies.
“More people have died in the past two years alone than have cast ballots. Just from tanks coming down and burning people, people searching for food and Christmas presents, and people dying as a result.
“He explained to the BBC why he felt compelled to stand up for Nigerians before anyone else.”

Nwajiuba also cited data from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), which showed that 183 businesses had closed in the previous two years. He claims that this is in contrast to the relative stability that existed under Buhari.
According to the former minister, Buhari’s administration made strides in important areas including oil output, non-oil exports, and mining.
“He completed this task, and the results are evident,” he stated.
“All of our government actions, mining activities, non-oil export improvements, oil export improvements, and the concept of condensates are all clearly stated.”
However, Nwajiuba conceded that Buhari’s presidency was a great success despite the fact that he was simply human and lacked comprehensive understanding.
Buhari passed away at the age of 82 at a London, UK, clinic on July 13, 2025.
Buhari was elected president in 2015 and re-elected in 2019 after first serving as military ruler of state from 1983 to 1985.
