Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has denied long-standing claims that he once attempted to serve more than the two terms allowed by the constitution.
Obasanjo was recalled as the leader of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007.
At the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation’s Democracy Dialogue in Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday, Obasanjo stated that no Nigerian, living or dead, could provide proof that he ever advocated for a third term.
He said, “I don’t think I’m a fool. I know how to go about getting it if I believe I want it. And no Nigerian—dead or alive—will claim that I called him and communicated my desire for a third term. None.
The former president contended that if he had properly pursued it, he could have obtained a third term if he had been able to secure debt relief for Nigeria, which he described as a far more difficult achievement.
I keep telling them that, “Look, if I wanted debt relief, which is more difficult than getting a third term and I got it, I would have gotten a third term too,” he said.

One of Obasanjo’s administration’s best-known accomplishments was the $18 billion debt relief package that Nigeria obtained from the Paris Club in 2005.
Obasanjo also cautioned against leaders who believe they are infallible, calling such a mindset a “lack of faith.”
There are those who think that no one else will be there unless they are. They will even claim that they don’t have any other partners. Obasanjo stated, “I think that is a sin against God because if God takes you away, which He can do at any time, then someone else will come and that person may do better or worse.”
The 87-year-old elder statesman emphasized that young, energetic, and dynamic leaders demonstrate the best leadership qualities.
“I am aware that it is best to be young, ideal, energetic, and dynamic. One does not have the best when one is “kuje kuje,” or weak or frail, he said.
Obasanjo’s remarks reportedly coincide with continuing discussions about autocratic rulers and constitutional alteration to prolong presidential terms throughout Africa.
