Former President Goodluck Jonathan met with Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential contender, behind closed doors in Abuja on Thursday.
Peter Obi revealed on his X account that the two leaders’ meeting took place behind closed doors.

Their talks, he continued, were productive and centered on the situation in Nigeria.

I had a meeting with my beloved older brother, former President Goodluck Jonathan @GEJonathan, who is a statesman and leader, today in Abuja. We talked about the status of our beloved country at a productive meeting behind closed doors,” Obi wrote.

The two are reportedly meeting amid speculation that Jonathan is thinking about a 2027 presidential candidacy.

Before the 2027 presidential election, Jonathan’s supporters reportedly started contacting opposition leaders, such as Peter Obi of the Labour Party, in an attempt to build a broad coalition capable of taking on President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The 2027 election is clearly becoming an all-Southern race, with the PDP zoning its presidential ticket to the South and the APC hierarchy already supporting Tinubu for reelection.

Leading PDP leaders, especially those in the North, have been putting increasing pressure on Jonathan to enter the race, according to party insiders who spoke to Vanguard.

A number of prominent PDP figures had also urged Obi to rejoin the party following his 2022 defection to the LP, where he became the presidential flagbearer, prior to Jonathan’s name reappearing.

As one of the most vocal opponents of the Tinubu administration, Obi is also supporting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, which includes a number of well-known individuals, such as former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Senate President David Mark, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

When asked repeatedly if he would join the ADC or rejoin the PDP, Obi insisted that he was dedicated to “any move that will save the country from the APC.”

Amaechi and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde are among the other Southern politicians who are allegedly considering a confrontation with Tinubu.

According to sources who spoke to Vanguard on Sunday, Jonathan’s team had started reaching out to important candidates, such as Obi, to persuade him to resign in favor of the outgoing president.
