According to former Delta State governorship candidate Fidelis Oditah, a person should not be eligible to serve as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) merely because they are a professor.
His statements come after Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the electoral body’s head, bowed out.
He brought up the fact that two professors in Akwa Ibom were found guilty of electoral fraud in 2019 while making an appearance on Channels Television.
Though he made it clear that he had nothing against professors, he maintained that academic designations alone shouldn’t be the only consideration when making selections.
“I don’t want to belittle or denigrate professors, but it’s crucial to stress that merely being a professor and having expertise in a certain field of study does not make one eligible to serve as an INEC commissioner, much less chairman.
Of course, we also recall that two academics in Akwa-Ibom State were found guilty of engaging in fraudulent electoral activities during the 2019 elections.
“We must exercise caution when assuming that a professorship is a prerequisite in and of itself.
“I believe we must exercise caution. I don’t believe that hiring professors alone is the answer. They have nothing against them. He stated, “I have nothing against professors.”
