According to Governor Monday Okpebholo, the government would look into how former Governor Godwin Obaseki spent $10 million.
Fred Itua, Okpebholo’s chief press secretary, stated that No amount of deceit from the PDP would prevent the government from looking into the $10 million that was approved late under Obaseki.
In a statement, Edo PDP Chairman Chris Nehikhare reportedly said that it was disheartening that the Okepbholo vowed to investigate Obaseki’s government over the $10 million spent on Observer Press equipment.
Itua said in a statement on Wednesday that Nehikhare misunderstood Governor Okpebholo’s reasoning and showed ignorance.
He insisted that the government look into how the prior government used the money and urged the PDP Chairman to support their allegation with facts rather than falsehoods.
According to the text, “The Governor was referring to the $10 million that Godwin Obaseki budgeted for The Observer Newspaper just before the Edo State governorship elections in 2024, not the refurbished equipment purchased from ‘Ogbete Market’ in Enugu State.”
Using The Observer Newspaper as a conduit, Obaseki, a portfolio scammer who oversaw the looting of Edo’s commonwealth, quickly took $10 million just days before Edo State’s governorship election in late 2024.
In addition to being deceptive, Nehikhare’s frantic attempt to redirect the discussion reveals the PDP’s ongoing dishonesty.
When it comes to the so-called “sophisticated machines,” Nehikhare simply overlooks the true issue, which is that these overused and ineffective machines now cost billions of naira to operate correctly. They may have been purchased at a roadside market by Obaseki, but he left a financial legacy that the current administration now has to clear.

However, Nehikhare’s perplexed indignation over the dismissal of Observer employees is more concerning. How is it that he expects those who are no longer hired to be on site? He mindlessly endorses the administration’s policies, but his reasoning is just as wrong.
“Nehikhare should provide an explanation for Obaseki’s decision to spend an astounding $10 million on a state-owned newspaper that is essentially invisible on newspaper stands throughout the State and the nation in his final days—during a period when vital sectors like healthcare and education were still underfunded—instead of this ridiculous attempt at diversion.
“Nehikhare ought to present the facts accurately rather than fictionally if he wants to argue them. Fiction, however, appears to be the PDP’s preferred instrument.
