Professor Shehu Abdullahi Ma’aji, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the North West Development Commission (NWDC), has been tasked by Ola Olukoyede, Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), with carrying out the commission’s regional development mandate with diligence, accountability, and transparency.
On Wednesday, Olukoyede took the lead during a courtesy visit to the EFCC’s corporate offices in Jabi, Abuja, by Ma’aji and other senior NWDC officials.
“I urge you to dedicate yourself to that mandate. Olukoyede noted that regional development commissions were established to allow each geopolitical zone to develop at its own pace. “It’s a big mandate,” he remarked.
“After you receive releases for your budget, we want to see progress within the next year.
“We want to see concrete developmental projects that you have implemented so that the Nigerian people’s and government’s trust in you will not be betrayed,” he continued.
He urged the NWDC leadership to take early precautions against financial mismanagement and emphasized the significance of accountability and transparency in the commission’s activities.
“Avoid signing any documents you are unsure of right away. Know who you are hiring as executive directors, especially in charge of procurement of products and services, and do your profiling extremely carefully,” he advised.
Olukoyede reminded the NWDC leader that he has ultimate accountability in his capacity as chief accounting officer. Examine whatever they do with an open mind. “It’s better to prevent than to treat,” he continued.
The chairman of the EFCC reassured the NWDC that the commission was prepared to work together, highlighting a collaboration based on honesty and consistent compliance.
He declared, “We are prepared to work with you in a collaborative spirit and to make sure that you start on a very good note and maintain the tempo.”
In response, Professor Ma’aji asked for a formal collaboration with the EFCC to guarantee that the NWDC stays on course from the beginning.
According to him, the commission was set up to promote coordinated socioeconomic development in the North West by means of institutional strengthening, social interventions, infrastructure delivery, and economic empowerment.
Ma’aji stated, “As a new public institution entrusted with significant public resources, the Commission recognizes that transparency, accountability, and strong internal controls are fundamental to achieving its mandate and sustaining public confidence.”
According to him, the EFCC is essential for institutional strengthening, prevention, and enforcement.
The head of the NWDC clarified that the planned partnership would concentrate on capacity building and preventive advising support to establish reliable financial management and compliance systems.
He added that the program is in line with the Federal Government’s larger goals for governance reform, which include ensuring value for money and protecting institutions from financial malfeasance and reputational risk. “This is to ensure that we don’t start on the wrong footing.”
