Reno Omokri, a former presidential adviser, has criticized Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential contender, for allegedly associating with dubious figures.
Omokri questioned the consistency of Obi’s anti-corruption position in a post posted on X on Wednesday, claiming that the former governor of Anambra State is now siding with individuals he had previously distanced himself from.
“Observe the caliber of individuals Peter Obi is interacting with.” Barons of corruption and alleged looters,” Omokri stated.
“And this is the same Peter Obi who declared that he would not be a part of any ‘structures of criminality,'” he continued.
Omokri also brought up Obi’s rhetoric from the previous general elections, namely his appeal to religious organizations.
He claimed that “Peter Obi was jumping from church to church during the run-up to the last election, shouting, ‘Church, wake up and take back your country.”
“Now observe the caliber of individuals Peter Obi wishes to bring back to Nigeria,” he continued.
Allegations of assets associated with Nigeria’s former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, were also mentioned by the former presidential assistant.
“Malami, Abubakar! A man from whom a court ordered the seizure of 57 opulent residences, hotels, and other valuable assets totaling ₦212 billion as corruption proceeds? “Omokri said.”
He went on, “A man who was allegedly able to corruptly acquire properties worth ₦212 billion in a country that had over two million homeless, hungry, and desolate Internally Displaced Persons at the time he allegedly illegally acquired them?”
“With these kinds of people, Peter Obi hopes to save Nigeria?”
Additionally, he reiterated Obi’s campaign slogan that was aimed at religious organizations and offered an alternative meaning.
“Now, when Peter Obi said, ‘Church, wake up and take back your country,’ Nigerians understand what he meant,” he wrote.
He claimed that he wanted to return Nigeria to the era of General Sani Abacha, his old employer, when looting was a recognized state policy.
He continued, “Remember that Peter Obi was employed by Abacha.”
Omokri made a reference to a well-known criminal.
“Perhaps Peter Obi would have paid the infamous armed robber Anini a visit of solidarity if he were still alive,” he remarked.
“Obi learned a lot under his beloved boss, Abacha!” he said.
