Opinion: FG should abolish the era of Governors retiring to senatorial seats after an extended tenure of 8yrs- Human Rights Activist Says.
By Onome Naomi Onojaefe
Over the years since the inception of democracy in nigeria, it has become a norm and tradition for governors of various states after a second tenure in office to opt for senatorial tickets in extension, to remain in power. It is almost as if it is a programmed approach for governors to obtain senatorial tickets before the expiration of an 8yr tenure from their various parties with assurances to successfully sit. As a matter of fact it has become their retirement office, some of them have spent about 12 yrs in Senate after their usual 8 yrs extension as governors.
Comrade Prince expressed his displeasure, stating that it is unbecoming and disappointing about a nation who has some well thought out constitutional rules that must be followed through but yet lacks the ethics to rule the nation accordingly. At this point, based on analysis, non of these sitting senators who were former governors have even moved a single motion that is being accepted in the house, both in the senate and house of Assembly.
Saviour, as the voice of the voiceless is of the opinion that Nigerians in diaspora should oppose the era of governors retiring to senate positions.Every governor after 8 yrs regime should be denied the senatorial ticket. They should go back to their various states and retire to their villages just like how Peter Obi retired when he finished his tenure in Anambra state, he said.
Furthermore, he stated that Nigeria has a lot of empty lands for the governors to go and farm or build up companies to employ the jobless not look for ways to siphone the nation’s wealth and resources. He said federal government should take a cue from former Head of State, Olusegun Obasanjo whom upon retirement, retraced his steps to his hometown where he tilled lands for cultivation and created employment opportunities for the people.

These governors should go and do productive things upon retirement to create space for those who has the interest of Nigerians at heart, those with virgin ideas to occupy senatorial seats.
The governors have not been productive during their tenure even with the heavy budgets they present, rather they fly all around the world for meetings they can simply hold here in Nigeria, a waste of public funds. The social amenities required from the electorates has been abandoned, Nigerian roads are bad, no good water, electricity is zero, infact all that was promised was never fulfilled so what are they doing in the senate? The senate is a place whereby there is no monopoly of opinion, Comrade stated.
Saviour calls on the presidency to abolish this practice by governors, the era of “from governorship to getting an automatic ticket to Senate” should be abolished. Let them retire and give a way for more competent hands to rule.
He stated that Nigerians need people who love Nigerians truly, to serve in insincerity without much ado, noting also that some sitting senators are too weak, they’re going to the senate to sleep. Therefore there is need for young people with the vibes of capability and good intention who can go there and perform.
People from grassroots who will represent their constituency well not governors that have failed in their various states yet opting to occupy senatorial positions.

These inadequacies has resulted to incompetence, leaving the country at a stand still, creating retrogression rather than progression. The situation of the economy is worsening by the day, we are moving backwards because our law makers are incompetent people, inept in their various states as governors and then bringing that same attitude into the senatorial positions they hold. This issue should be noted and addressed, comrade Saviour Iche quipped.
