Joash Amupitan, the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral agency (INEC), has been advised by former Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole to make sure that those with political connections—particularly spouses of politicians—are not assigned to sensitive posts inside the agency.
When the new INEC Chairman was being screened by the Senate, he made this statement.
Conflicts of interest have the potential to erode election trust, the member cautioned.
The Senate President emphasized that we should talk from our own experiences, so he added, “One last point, an experience we had in Edo State.” The widow of a dying political party leader is currently a director or the head of INEC’s ICT unit in the state.
The former governor claims that these appointments allow for manipulation by obfuscating the distinction between partisan politics and electoral management.
“The wife boasted that she could provide information that would help them deal with accreditation issues because the husband was the PDP chairman at the time,” Oshiomhole claimed.
He called on the new INEC leadership to establish unambiguous rules that will avert future confrontations of this kind.
“As you promised, will you be able to establish a rule that states that a spouse of a politician is not eligible for a sensitive position? We must not allow INEC to become a family matter,” he continued.
