The Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, is experiencing a leadership crisis in Osun State. Ahead of the upcoming governorship race, different voices within the party have openly reiterated their viewpoints on the party’s structure and political direction.
Sunday Bisi, the state chairman, has denied allegations that he has been dismissed from office, and his standing is at the heart of the controversy.
A stakeholders’ forum that declared his alleged expulsion was unlawful and ineffective, according to Bisi.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday in Osogbo, Bisi insisted that his term as the state’s constitutionally elected party chairman is still in effect.
In order to remove or alter the party’s elected structures, the forum is not authorized by law. The chairman is still me,” he declared.
He maintained that decisions impacting elected officials could only be made by appropriate party institutions operating within the parameters of the party’s constitution.
Bisi revealed the Osun PDP had endorsed Governor Ademola Adeleke for reelection rather than fielding a candidate for the August governorship election.
Because the PDP does not have a candidate for the August gubernatorial election, the party has supported Governor Ademola Adeleke to be re-elected. According to him, such is the reality of the situation.
The majority of elected politicians in the state, according to Bisi, are still PDP members, despite the party’s internal conflicts.
“Our elected officials are still in the PDP, with the exception of the governor and deputy governor. He continued, “As our party does not have a candidate, we have endorsed Governor Adeleke.”
The chairman also reacted to statements ascribed to Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, the former governor, criticizing them as being at odds with the stance of what he called the Osun party’s mainstream infrastructure.
Former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola’s comments, according to Bisi, is an outright treachery and a continuation of an unsuccessful 2022 conspiracy to overthrow Governor Adeleke.
He clarified how internal PDP splits at the national level had raised questions about the governor’s political future and led to some calculated choices.
“The rift within the PDP national leadership posed a threat to our governor’s campaign. By seeking a platform for re-election, the governor did the right thing. Even Prince Oyinlola was the first to propose this idea,” he claimed.
Bisi said that the Osun party’s core leadership and membership base continued to support the present state executive and its choices.
“Any unelected, illegal, or unauthorized group cannot truncate the governor, our leadership, or our elected mandate as state officers,” he said, referring to the mainstream Osun PDP.
In spite of Governor Adeleke’s alleged defection to the Accord Party, Prince Oyinlola had earlier insisted that the PDP was still a strong political force in the state at a separate stakeholders’ meeting in Osogbo.
He claimed that the purpose of the meeting was to shed light on party activities at the state and national levels.
Oyinlola stated, “There have been some confusing narratives being pushed out about the status of PDP, especially in Osun State. What we have done today is narrate situations as they are to our members, so that the entire wards and local governments in Osun will know exactly where PDP stands today in Osun State.”
Oyinlola denied rumors that the state’s PDP apparatus had been dismantled to create the Accord Party in order to help Adeleke win reelection.
The PDP is a party with a presence in every location across the nation. “We will not allow it to die in our own time,” he stated.
Adding, “We are holding on to PDP,” he said the party was still open to new developments. Our governor is welcome to return tomorrow and spend time with his family in the PDP, but for the time being, the party is firmly established in Osun State.
