There are more than 123 million Nigerians registered in the nation’s National Identity database, each of whom has a unique National Identity Number (NIN), according to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
NIMC’s Director General, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, announced this milestone during the 7th National Day of Identity conference in Abuja.
The Director General gave information on the noteworthy advancements made to the national identity project, pointing out that it is now reaching both domestically and internationally, with 52% of Nigerians living overseas now enrolled in the Diaspora and 85% of prisoners in Nigeria’s prison system enrolled.
Engr. Coker-Odusote attributed this quick expansion to the enrolling procedure being made easier by recent infrastructure improvements.
A 49% decrease in the time required to obtain a NIN has resulted from the commission’s expansion of its network to include more than 200 enrollment locations both domestically and overseas.

Along with growing the database, NIMC has standardized the NIN across about 125 federal organizations and agencies. Strengthening the national data ecosystem and enhancing governance and service delivery are the goals of this integration.
The NIMC database is safe and secured by international standards, the Director General told the public in response to their worries about data security.
The database is the most secure in the nation, she said, and this is important for boosting public trust in the national digital identification initiative.
Nigeria is making the news as it continues to develop a strong digital infrastructure, with the NIN acting as a fundamental component for social services, security, and national planning.
A deliberate attempt is being made to provide each citizen a unique, verifiable identity, as seen by the ongoing enrollment campaign.
