Senator David Mark, the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has named and swore in Alhaji Rahman Akanni Owokoniran, a former Lagos State Housing Commissioner, as the party’s zonal chairman for the South-West.
Just after the zonal executive committee led by Owokoniran was sworn in, the party denied in a statement released in Lagos that the party was experiencing a crisis in the region.
The ADC is still determined to take control of the party from the All Progressives Congress (APC), according to a statement signed by Mr. Coker Onita, a party chieftain. It also warned that party members should be cautious of deceptive and anonymous publications that are going around under the name “ADC Lagos State Stakeholders Forum.”
The Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Bamidele Ajadi, the highest ranking national officer of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the Southwest, duly inaugurated and swore in Hon. (Alhaji) Rahman Akanni Owokoniran as the South West Zonal chairman of the party today, Onita continued, “with the full consent, approval, and authority of the National Chairman of ADC, His Excellency Senator David Mark, and the national leadership of the party.”
“Any claim that the South-west zonal leadership has been disowned by the national leadership of ADC is completely false, misleading, and deliberate calculated to deceive party members and the general public,” the party continued.
Additionally, the party sees this anonymous publication as a part of a concerted effort by supporters and agents of the ruling APC to split the ADC, create internal strife, and undermine it, especially in the Southwest where the party is still gaining ground and gaining credibility.
Coker Onita characterized the ADC Lagos State Stakeholders Forum as a faceless organization that is unknown to the party’s leadership and is portrayed as fifth columnists that work for the ruling party with the express intent of dismantling the party.
Anonymous allegations in a democratic political party are acts of subversion rather than accountability, the party declared. Those responsible for this publication should have the guts to outspoken their names, positions, and mandates if they genuinely believe they are ADC stakeholders.
“The ADC will adamantly oppose APC-sponsored infiltration, disinformation, and bad-faith politics that seek to undermine legitimately elected party leadership, but it does encourage constructive criticism, internal discussion, and lawful engagement.
In order to provide Nigerians with a viable alternative, ADC is still unified, devoted, and determined. The national government recognizes and completely supports the South West zonal leadership, led by Hon. Rahman Owokoniran.
