The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed concerns over the Supreme Court judgment granting autonomy to local governments, warning that the Federal Government’s attempt to create another bureaucracy could lead to trouble.
“We are reviewing the judgment and we believe that the matter is not yet settled,” said PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, at a world press conference in Abuja on Sunday.
“We emphasize the importance of addressing issues of this magnitude through dialogue rather than through the courts”, the PDP spokesman said.
Ologunagba noted that the Federal Government’s attempt to create another bureaucracy in local government control could lead to corruption and manipulation. “Any reforms to local government should be done in conjunction with governors, not by fiat of the Federal Government,” he said.

The PDP spokesman also stressed that governors have a crucial role in managing local governments and that issues arising within a local government should be addressed by the state government, not the Federal Government.
“We will continue to have conversations with governors and find solutions to ensure the efficiency of state government administration in local governments,” he concluded.
