According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), they have a score to settle with Dangote Refinery regarding the workers’ unionization.
Festus Osifo, the president of PENGASSAN, expressed this stance during an interview with Channels Television’s Sunday Politics in the midst of the continuing conflict between the union and Dangote Refinery.
There won’t be a shortage of gasoline in Nigeria as a result of the union’s scheduled strike, he promised.
In response to the Dangote Refinery’s alleged mass termination of Nigerian employees, the union had instructed its members all throughout the country to resign.
Although Osifo acknowledged that PENGASSAN had reduced the gas supply to the refineries, he made it clear that there would not be an immediate shortage of fuel or a resumption of lines at the gas stations.
Also, he urged the federal government to order the Dangote refinery to stop.
“I want us to break down the potential effects. As of today, tomorrow, and even next weekend, the effect will not be conducive to Nigerians lining up to purchase PMS. It will not fit into that.
The gas supply to the refineries, fertilizers, and everything else has been shut off as we speak. Indeed, we have taken that action because, he continued, “if someone claims he is insane, we will tell him that we are the goose that laid the golden egg — that we are much crazier.”
The federal administration reportedly invited both groups to a roundtable session as part of its attempts to find a peaceful solution to the present standoff.
In an announcement issued on Sunday, Muhammad Dingyadi, the Minister of Labor and Employment, said that invitations had been sent to the management of Dangote Refinery and the PENGASSAN leadership to attend an urgent meeting in his office on Monday in order to resolve their disagreement.
PENGASSAN would attend the planned meeting, Osifo announced Sunday in response to the offer, but he reiterated that one of their main requests is the complete recall of the employees who were fired by the Dangote Refinery.
“We are heading to the Federal Ministry of Labor tomorrow for a meeting that we have been called to.
He continued, “Our stance is very clear; you cannot send nearly a thousand Nigerians to the streets in that manner because they are exercising their right to unionize.”
