In response to the dismissal of more than 800 employees who joined the union, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has directed its members to immediately stop fueling the Dangote Petroleum Refinery with gas and crude oil.
The union claimed that the refinery’s “illegitimate and provocative action” against its members was the reason for the shutdown in a directive signed by Lumumba Okugbawa, its general secretary, and dated Saturday.
The letter, which was sent to branch chairmen nationwide, urged members to take firm action against the factory that produces 650,000 barrels per day.
In response to our members exercising their constitutional right to unionization, the management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has disconnected us, the union said.
Instead of interacting with us in a meaningful way to make amends, they have gone farther on a pro-illegitimacy and disinformation campaign.
Following these, you are now instructed to promptly turn off NGIC’s gas supply. The refinery’s crude oil supply valves should all be closed. There should be an immediate stop to the loading process for the ship that is going there.
In particular, Okugbawa instructed the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC) branch to make sure that the refinery’s gas supply was immediately cut off, and he also instructed all branch chairmen to rapidly report on compliance progress.
According to the letter, “Injury to one, injury to all.”
Dangote Refinery stated that it had fired certain employees for alleged sabotage less than twenty-four hours before to the event, but the business disputed that the termination was related to unionization.
However, PENGASSAN maintains that more than 800 Nigerian workers were singled out soon after they willingly joined the organization, accusing management of breaking union laws and engaging in unfair labor practices.
