According to Peter Obi, a former candidate for presidency of the Labour Party, the current coastal highway project being carried out by presidency Bola Tinubu’s administration is an inappropriate priority.
Insecurity and a failing economy are two more urgent problems that the current administration should address, according to the former governor of Anambra State.

Speaking on Monday, Obi questioned the timing and justification of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project in an interview with Arise Television.
He asserts that it is dubious to invest enormous sums of money in a number of infrastructure initiatives that will “lead nowhere when we have crisis.”

“Are you suggesting that protecting Nigeria is less important than the coastal road?” he inquired.
The former governor was said to have maintained that before starting such large-scale initiatives as the coastal highway project, the problems of insecurity and economic stabilization must be resolved.
The roads that we have around the nation are no longer sturdy, he stated. To protect your nation, you spend your resources to fix those highways first. Roads are not even as basic as security. If you are unable to drive to your village, would you rather have a road to it? Allow us to continue as we are if you would like. Let’s address those issues if you say that our problem is power, that they are unable to travel to the farm, or that insecurity is our concern.

He urged the government to provide the security services the authority to tackle any criminal danger head-on.
