Peter Obi, a former presidential contender for the Labour Party (LP) in the general elections of 2023, expressed his opinions about making mathematics a non-necessary admittance condition for students studying the arts.
According to Obi, claiming that pupils studying the arts do not require mathematics implies that they do not require analytical accuracy.
The former governor of Anambra condemned the decision, stating that mathematics specially fosters the essential skill of clear reasoning and sound judgment.
He cautioned that pupils drop a course as soon as they feel they don’t need it.
“To imply that arts students can do without analytical precision or clarity of thought, the very foundations of intellectual maturity, is to suggest that they do not need mathematics,” Obi stated.
Many students will drop the topic entirely once they feel they can comfortably ignore it, leaving them unprepared for the rigors of contemporary life, when nearly all human endeavors are supported by computation, logic, and systematic reasoning.
It is discouraging—in fact, depressing—to hear of such regress at a time when science, technology, and data rule the world. Reverting to a system that ignores mathematics is not something we can afford. Every child, regardless of discipline, should have the abilities and competences necessary for the twenty-first century, according to our educational policy.
